Makerspace

Welcome to the CMS Makerspace

What exactly is a "Makerspace" in a library?

The maker movement in libraries is about teaching our patrons to think for themselves, to think creatively, and to look for do-it-yourself solutions before running off to the store. In short, a makerspace is a place where people come together for hands on learning and to create with technology.

Upcycled Bottle Planters 🌱

Our Advanced Domestic Arts class put creativity and sustainability to work in the Makerspace with a hands-on Upcycled Bottle Planter project. Students transformed ordinary plastic bottles into unique, functional planters by cutting, designing, and decorating them with their own creative touches.

This activity not only encouraged students to rethink everyday materials and explore eco-friendly solutions, but it also gave them the chance to practice skills like measuring, problem-solving, and design. Each student left with a one-of-a-kind planter ready to hold soil, seeds, or small plants—bringing a bit of greenery and creativity into their homes or classrooms.

Projects like this highlight the Makerspace’s mission: to combine innovation, sustainability, and hands-on learning in ways that inspire students to see the world (and its resources) in new ways.

Upcycled Button Art

In the Advanced Domestic Arts class, students worked on an innovative upcycled button art project in their classroom makerspace. Each student was provided with a canvas as their base. They started by layering old book pages and fabric scraps onto the canvas using Mod Podge, creating a textured background. Once the background was dry, they began constructing their main design: a tree. The tree's trunk and branches were shaped from additional material and then adorned with an assortment of colorful, recycled buttons. The buttons, varying in size, shape, and hue, became the leaves of the tree, turning what could have been discarded items into a unique and meaningful piece of art. The project not only fostered creativity but also encouraged students to think about sustainability through upcycling.
